Accept Responsibility And Overcome Procrastination

In order to successfully overcome procrastination, you must learn to accept responsibility for your life. Procrastinators tend to delude themselves by denying reality and refusing to believe that they are responsible for the situation their life is in. It takes honesty to take a hard look at your life, but it is necessary if you want to overcome procrastination and lead a full and rich life.

The first step in accepting responsibility is to recognize that you have a problem. We all have problems, some small and some large. However many of the problems that procrastinators experience are caused by their procrastination!

Oddly, many procrastinators know what they need to do to fix a problem, they might even know exactly what specific actions must be taken and yet they will come up with reasons to avoid taking the action required to fix their problem.

Procrastinators are slow to do anything in the present moment, instead they promise to take action in the future. They say they will act when circumstances are right; they will come up with all sorts of reasons to delay action. They feel the need to take action and know they should and even know what action to take but delude themselves into thinking that they cannot and that it is not their fault that they can't.

Luckily, research has shown that you can break bad habits and instill new ones in as little as two weeks if you want to change and give it an honest effort. So if you want to overcome procrastination, take hope. Think about those people you know who always seem to get things done and model their positive habits. Find out how they approach tasks and how they stay focused. Procrastination is a big monster that won't go away unless you take definite steps to defeat it.

Here are a few tips to help you accept responsibility for your life and overcome procrastination.

Prepare yourself mentally to be productive. Begin each day with meditation, visualizations, or affirmations for your success during the day at hand. Leave success affirmations within view to inspire you throughout the day.

Find out what time of day you are naturally most productive. Is it morning, evening, or maybe in the afternoon? You will find certain times of the day it is harder for you to concentrate. It is different for everyone. So don't fight your nature. Instead, work with it and find the time where you can focus easily and then schedule your most difficult tasks for this time.

Control your socializing. Don't get sucked into office chit chat or online chat room and forums. Isolate yourself so you can stay focused on the work at hand. Allot a specific time for socializing and don't let it distract you otherwise. In fact, make it a point to uncover all the things that distract you and remove them from your working environment.

You are not a victim of procrastination. You have the power to overcome it. Learn to determine what can realistically be put off and what has to be done now. Then take responsibility for removing distractions so you can overcome procrastination and start getting things done.
