The Benefits Of Learning Origami

Origami is a hobby that costs very little to take up yet it offers many benefits to adults and children alike. It may not seem to be all that educational, the simple folding of paper, but it has been shown to actually improve various skills such as reading. In order to make an origami creation, one has to be able to properly read the instructions and understand what was written. Then the person must logically reason out how to go about creating each fold. Origami requires concentration and increases focus. You can see how the skill of reading can be benefited by learning origami. Some more equally important benefits are found below.

Origami also teaches sequencing which is the mathematical skill honed by this hobby. Origami exposes people to geometry and teaches problem solving. In order to make an origami creation one works with fractions, measurements and symmetry. That is why teachers often use simple origami techniques in the classroom.

Origami also develops fine motor skills. Origami can be undertaken by those who need to overcome problems with their hands working together and who need to improve motor skills. In this way, origami improves upon skills that are needed for daily living.

Origami can also help to instill self confidence and improve social skills among both adults and children. Being able to follow instructions and create a work of beauty gives one a feeling of success and accomplishment. One must also be patient and attentive in order to do origami. Origami also helps to improve memory. A good memory is needed in order to recall the sequences needed to create an object. One must pay attention and concentrate. All of these are valuable skills to be learned which can benefit children and adults in all areas of their lives. Origami is a simple and inexpensive hobby which can boost the self esteem and confidence of those who learn it.

Origami might be an inexpensive hobby but the benefits derived from it can be immense whether it is used in the classroom or for personal pleasure. Some of the benefits include the development of fine motor skills, improving reading, honing math skills, teaching concentration, focus and patience, and improving memory. One of the reasons that origami is such a great hobby especially for children is that a child can enjoy these life enhancing benefits at such a low cost. All that is required to undertake origami is paper. Many simple and beautiful creations can be made from standard weight copy paper so no big investment is needed in special papers until one is ready to take up more complex designs that require special materials.
